Young Person’s Competition To Help Shape The Town

Young people are the future and so it is so important to make sure that their views, opinions, and ideas for change are heard and considered.

Over the past 6 months the Penzance Town Deal Board has been working hard to create and share their vision for a more sustainable future by 2030. Part of this work has been engaging with the community to discuss what they would love to see in Penzance in the years to come. We have been especially interested in ideas that focus on sustainability, clean growth, and that celebrate the beautiful place that Penzance is.

Back in the summer we held a competition for young people. Our question was “What is your vision for the future of Penzance in 2030?”. We asked people aged 10-19 who live in Penzance for their thoughts and ideas. They could answer in any way they wished.

Now we have our winner!

Dan has won our prize of a GoPro Hero 8 and all of the accessories for his insightful, creative, and inspiring ideas concerning the future of Penzance.

Something that we loved about Dan’s ideas was that they picked up on some of the ideas that we had, and were also ideas that other people in the community also viewed as important for Penzance.

Something Dan’s ideas were centred around was the sea, and how we can highlight the sea in our vision for the future. The sea is such an important part of life in Penzance and so we enjoyed that his theme for his ideas was reconnecting with the sea.

One of Dan’s ideas was centred around renewable energy as a way of creating geothermal houses. This idea was influenced by the work that has been done at Jubilee Pool to create a geothermal pool. We loved this idea. Renewable energy will play an important role in the future of Penzance and so making it to homes is important too.

Dan also had an idea about using the sea as a way to create further tourism through a marine discovery boat to explore more of the marine wildlife here in Cornwall.

Dan’s final idea was all about healthy living and making the most of outdoor spaces, and one way of doing this is through an outdoor gym. Only recently the Town Deal Board announced that we will be bringing a free outdoor gym to Newlyn Green for all to use. It is great that already some of Dan’s ideas will be coming to life. We are very excited for this project to be completed soon.

Celebrating Success

It is great to see young people actively engaging in the future of the town, sharing their thoughts, and inspiring others.

Dan was featured in his school newsletter sharing his ideas on sustainability, and we hope that it has encouraged others to want to voice their opinions and advocate for sustainability.

In the newsletter he states: ‘Healthy living and being eco-friendly is essential for the future of Penzance and I am proud to have been a part of this.’

We love seeing people who will be the future of Penzance become a part of decision making, and believe it should be encouraged as much as possible. But not only this — Dan now has a GoPro which has encouraged him to get out and head to the sea to get some GoPro footage of his water sports adventures.

Penzance and the Global Goals

in Town Deal

The Global Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. Learn more and take action.

Everyone in Penzance wants a better future, sometimes we might disagree with the actions to get us there or even what better looks like but we all want the best for us, our families, our friends and our community.

The Global Goals are a framework for achieving that same better future but asking how we all play a part in supporting our global community as well as our local.

Developed by the United Nations after 196 governments agreed their version of what better looks like, the 17 goals are designed to achieve equality for all and reduce our overall impact on the planet we call home.

The goals range from eradicating poverty everywhere through to job creation in a decarbonised world. They try to encompass as many topics as possible without being overwhelming.

As part of the Penzance Town Deal the Board decided to align with these goals and where possible explore what they meant for Penzance and the projects that were eligible for funding through the scheme.

This is the first time that an organisation in Penzance has taken this approach and being first means a lot of uncertainty. There is no trying to be perfect here, that isn’t attainable. It’s about creating new ways of approaching problems, considering the impact of the decisions with as wide a view as possible.

The Penzance Town Deal Board are working towards a set of clear objectives and here is how they align with the Global Goals:

Objective 1:
Improving the quality of employment and enterprise opportunities, in particular within the priority sectors identified in the Neighbourhood Development Plan

Objective 2:
Improving the built environment

Objective 3:
Maximise our natural and green capital as an economic and social resource

The hope is that while the Penzance Town Deal Board work towards these few goals with their objectives that other organisations responsible for the town also look at the work needed to achieve the remaining goals and support the Town Deals work towards the goals above.

This work has not gone unnoticed by the United Nations and early next year representatives from Penzance will deliver a presentation for the United Nations Global Compact on their experience working with the SDGs.

A significant step forward for Cornwall in being recognised as a place for sustainability. A huge step for Penzance being the town at the heart of it all. Other cities that are engaging in these goals are Bristol, Liverpool and further afield in Utrecht.

Had you heard of the Global Goals before? Perhaps by their other name, The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals? If you want to learn more about Penzance and Sustainability then stay tuned to the LovePenzance social media channels where we will be highlighting more organisations working towards the goals.

Penzance and the Doughnut Economy

in Town Deal

The Doughnut offers a vision of what it means for humanity to thrive in the 21st century – and Doughnut Economics explores the mindset and ways of thinking needed to get us there.

There are six core principles to Doughnut Economics:

1 – Change the goal
2 – Tell a new story
3 – Nurture human nature
4 – Get savvy with systems
5 – Design to distribute
6 – Create to regenerate

You can watch a really wonderful overview of all of these principles on the Doughnut Economics YouTube channel, so if you’re more of a visual learner head over then and pop back to see how Penzance is working with the principles.

Principle 1: Change the goal
At the moment countries are measured by something called GDP, which stands for Gross Domestic Product. Wouldn’t it be better if we changed that goal to how happy a country’s citizens are?

There is something called the Happy Planet Index and here the UK ranks just 34th.

Principle 2: Tell a new story
We are slowly starting to see this happen. For decades we’ve believed in trickle down economics, in other words, if we let the rich get richer, then everyone benefits. We’ve seen that this doesn’t work at all so we need a new story about how to create fairness and equality in our economy.

Principle 3: Nurture human nature
Drop the human intervention and look at nature for solutions to our problems. What can we learn from what already exists?

Principle 4: Get savvy with systems
There is a lot of recent evidence that demonstrates that for all the planning that happens across the world there are many things that are out of our control. Instead of relying on the old truths we need to find a more nuanced approach that encourages our humanity not hides it behind numbers and data.

Principle 5: Design to distribute
Create systems where the wealth created is distributed and not hoarded. Where everyone can benefit from their input into society. Where no one goes hungry or cold.

Principle 6: Create to regenerate
We are taking more from our planet than we can put back. This means we will run out of resources. We must look at how we make everything and find smart ways to dispose of our unwanted items so that they can be reborn into something new.

Much like we’ve mentioned in a previous post on the Global Goals the Penzance Town Deal Board are putting sustainability at the top of the agenda. When it comes to Doughnut Economics, they are picking up on work started by Cornwall Council when they created a Decision Making Wheel to evaluate projects.

The Board has advanced that wheel a little bit further and soon we will be sharing with you the role of the Doughnut Decision Making Wheel when the Board were choosing the projects for the Accelerator Fund.

Different from the Global Goals the Doughnut helps the Board to get practical with sustainability. It offers questions and considerations. The hope is that the Decision Making Wheel can be used by any organisation and everyone can benefit from a standard set of questions. Making sustainability easy and accessible.

Can Penzance be global leaders in sustainability?

in Town Deal

The Penzance Town Deal board was formed earlier in the year to focus on creating an investment plan to bid for up to £25m from the government to support large capital expenses for projects in Penzance and Newlyn.

While they were working on that the government announced a £500,000 Accelerator Fund specifically for projects that could be completed by March 2021. This meant they had to be most of the way along and needed a little nudge to get over the line.

The Board has always put sustainability at the heart of its vision for Penzance and Newlyn. Their objectives say that they are always to consider the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These 17 goals were created by 196 governments to take on the largest challenges around the world in sustainability. Until now it’s been very challenging to figure out what this means for a town like Penzance.

Another popular framework of sustainability being used in Cornwall is the Doughnut Economy framework. Cornwall Council used this as a decision making tool when creating the Saints Loops project.

The great thing about the two different frameworks is that they work really well together and so when evaluating projects for the investment plan the Board are using the Doughnut Decision Making Tool and then looking at the impact on the Sustainable Development Goals.

The biggest challenges in sustainability though is proving that it works. We are all aware that things need to change, but finding organisations, councils or whole towns that have successfully gone through these processes is difficult.

Penzance has really stepped up with the way that it is going about this.  Apart from the incredible groundbreaking piece of legislation that came from the Future Generations Act in Wales, using these principles, Penzance is leading the way for Cornwall on a global stage. The Penzance Town Deal Board has connections both to the United Nations Global Compact (the business part of the UN) and Cornwall Council and both are eagerly paying attention to Penzance as a guiding light for other towns across the world.

What is helping is the existing groundswell of grassroots action in the town, which has also put Penzance firmly on the map for being a place that cares and wants to start putting people and planet first. Plastic Free PZ led the town to be the first in the UK to achieve Plastic Free Communities Status, but it is by no means the only organisation working to help create a sustainable community.

Groups like Growing Links, Penwith Kids Clothesline, Whole Again Communities and Mounts Bay Marine Group are all doing amazing work. They are now joined by Sustainable PZ, a continuation of Plastic Free Penzance’s work, which aims to link and strengthen action to create a sustainable community which works for everyone.

The town is home to groundbreaking businesses such as Tinkture, who are committed to looking at circular economy models, and a host of other local, independent shops and services who are using their autonomy to put sustainable choices top of the agenda. New Dawn Traders, who deliver global cargo by sail, dock in Penzance harbour. Geothermal energy now heats the iconic Jubilee Pool. Guesthouses across the town are moving towards sustainable tourism.

This is what the UN Sustainable Development Goals look like for Penzance.

The Accelerator Fund has been agreed and at this time the Board are not only preparing to share their decision making with leaders across the UK but they are advancing the tool as well, building on what Cornwall Council started by creating a multi use decision making tool based on the Doughnut Economy and Sustainable Development Goals.

This is a world’s first and all eyes will be on Penzance as the Board takes on the enormous challenges that come with creating a positive future for a whole town as we battle pandemics, systemic social issues and the climate emergency.

Accelerator Fund

in Town Deal

The Penzance Town Deal Board is pleased to announce that we have received £500,000 from the government as part of an accelerator fund. We will be spending this investment on five main projects, all of which will be completed by March 2021. Our mission is to make Penzance a greener, more sustainable, and thriving space for all. The projects that we will be investing in to achieve this are: introducing bike sheds to encourage sustainable transport, an outdoor gym, increased shop mobility, maintenance of the acorn theatre and the promenade.

Our vision is that by 2030 Penzance will be a thriving and resilient town that connects both locals and visitors to its inspiring coastline and culture. One of the ways in which we will do this is through creating bike shelters and secure parking. This will encourage bike riding in Penzance and help to make travel more accessible. The shop mobility investment will also increase access into the town centre for the less mobile, helping to make travel more accessible and more green.

The prom is at the heart of Penzance, it is an open space where people can improve their sense of wellbeing by being beside the sea. To improve the open space and increase the amount of people visiting, we are enhancing the current works on the Penzance Prom to include more seating, flag-poles, and benches.

Investing in theatre and the arts is not just about helping the night-time economy, but it is also about investing in culture, creativity, and good mental-health. By putting £45,00 into the Acorn we can help fund their essential maintenance work.

Finally a free outdoor gym will improve outdoor spaces as it will make health facilities more accessible to people in Penzance. Based near Newlyn Green, it will be a place where people can exercise while also benefiting from being outdoors.

As further development on each project continues we will release more details here so please be sure to visit the LovePenzance Town Deal pages regularly to see all the latest.

£500,000 boost for people focused projects

in Town Deal

The Penzance Town Deal Board announces £500,000 boost for people focused projects across Penzance and Newlyn

The Penzance Town Deal Board has announced that five projects, which benefits the communities across the region of Penzance and Newlyn, have been given an extra £500,000 boost to help enable its continuation in benefiting the local area.

The funding, which was made available to the board from the government, aims to create a diverse economy, providing quality jobs and opportunities within the Cornish region that connects locals and visitors, with inspiring coastline and culture, and puts the people and the planet first.

The stipulations for the funding were that the money needed to be spent and the project completed no later than March 2021. While the board all recognised what a gift this is for Penzance and Newlyn, it was a unique challenge finding projects far enough along in their journey that would fit these criteria.

Working with partners like Cornwall Council and Cormac, the board was able to create a portfolio of projects that were then submitted back to the government for approval. The five projects are:

  • Bike Shelters – More good news for sustainable transport in Penzance as the board supports a plan to place several bike shelters throughout the town that will cater for several non-car parking options
  • Shop mobility – As pedestrianisation increases in the town, the board is considering those with access concerns through its investment into a variety of scooters to support those in need
  • Prom works – Development continues on the Prom and the town board were able to support funding for parts of the overall plan that were unable to make it through the budget. This includes increased access to the beach as well as seating areas
  • Acorn Theatre – A historic building of huge cultural significance requires upgrading in order to maintain its high-quality performance space and continue to be a valued part of the night-time economy
  • Outdoor Gym – The board is working to revitalise Newlyn through funding a new state of the art outdoor gym area for the public

Chair of Trustees at The Acorn, Paul Mullin, said: “This is fantastic news for the Acorn and for everyone who comes here to perform, enjoy performances, take classes or volunteer.

“The theatre was last upgraded over 20 years ago and this, alongside the wonderful generosity of our friends and supporters, will go a long way to securing the venue’s future for the next generation.

“The Acorn also helps generate an estimated £175,000 a year spending in other businesses in the night-time economy, so it’s good news for Penzance too.”

As the board continues to work on its Investment Plan for the £25m bid, it looks to deliver something direct to those that live and work in Penzance.

Emmie Kell, Board Member and Chief Executive of Cornwall Museum Partnerships said: “A strong cultural infrastructure is an important element of resilient towns and makes a contribution to people’s enjoyment and wellbeing.

“Cornwall’s rich creative offer delivers real social and economic impacts and investment in the Acorn will help to keep Penzance town centre alive whilst boosting the local economy.

“Put simply, culture helps make communities a better place to live, work and visit.”

Financial boost for Penzance and Marazion

in Town Deal

Cornwall is going to have a huge boost through a multinational scheme to deliver sustainable development to Penzance and Marazion.

The Town Deal Board are really excited about this project and how it links to projects that we are currently evaluating in our own process. It’s bringing together funds like ours and that of Experience in order to support all of the people that live and work in Penzance that we are very excited about.

The Mount’s Bay (Penzance and Marazion) area is set to benefit from a €2.8m investment to improve the coast path, support local businesses and encourage a sustainable year-round visitor economy.

It is part of EXPERIENCE – a €23.3m project involving six areas of the Channel region (Cornwall, Brittany, Pas-de-Calais, Compiègne, Norfolk and Kent). Cornwall’s funding will support activities which focus on out-of-season visitor experiences (October to March) and sustainable cultural tourism, connecting visitors with the distinct historical, geographical and cultural assets of the local Penzance area.

EXPERIENCE will bring the cultural and tourism sectors together to encourage a sustainable year-round visitor economy. Due to run until June 2023, the project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg France (Channel) England Programme. Of the €16.1m ERDF committed to the total project, €1.9m is allocated to Cornwall Council, which is investing a further €0.9m.

With sustainability at its heart, the project will look to improve connectivity and encourage more sustainable modes of transport. The coastal path between Marazion and Penzance will be upgraded to improve the resilience of the popular multi-use trail and work is set to begin in the autumn to resurface the path, improve accessibility and provide safer routes through the car parks on the route. There are also plans to develop an art and cultural experience along the path which embraces the unique assets of the area.

The project will offer training and support to businesses in the Penzance pilot area looking to create cycling and cultural experiences for visitors which link to the local area, its history and culture. Any local business interested in finding out more can keep up to date with the project by signing up for the EXPERIENCE newsletter.

And as Penzance gears up to take centre stage for the first leg of the Tour of Britain in September 2021, EXPERIENCE aims to help local businesses adapt and respond to the increased popularity of cycle tourism.

Councillor Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council Portfolio Holder for Culture, Economy and Planning, said: “This is another significant step in the realisation of the Bay-to-Bay multi-use trail proposal, the regeneration of the Marazion and Penzance area, and our commitment to promoting new types of tourism. It will help to get people walking and cycling more, and support our ambitions to cut Cornwall’s carbon emissions as part of our climate change action plan.”

“The project will help fund improvements to the route, making it more accessible to tourists and residents alike. Now is such an important time to support the visitor economy. We want people to see Cornwall as an ideal destination all year round.”

Town Deal Board Formed

in Town Deal

Penzance Town Deal Board formed to support a thriving, sustainable future for Penzance and Newlyn

The incredible town of Penzance has been selected as one of just 100 towns across the UK to bid for up to £25 million in grants to create a better future for everyone that works and lives there.

Perfectly placed next to the sea, Penzance’s strong community has a rich heritage of innovation and strong spirit that will be needed as we rebuild post Covid-19. This new bid is being guided by the Penzance Town Deal Board, which is made up of both private and public sector to give balance and maximise the voice of local people.

After an initial government appointed board was set up, an open invitation was sent out and applicants submitted CVs and supporting evidence for their candidacy. Following that an independent ranking system qualified the remaining members. Alongside the board there are working groups tackling specific parts of the project and we are encouraging anyone that might be interested in supporting to reach out to PenzanceTownDeal@cornwall.gov.uk.

The projects funded will focus on the future of Penzance and Newlyn and there are several ways you can have your say on what that future could look like. You can visit the ‘Penzance Town Deal Board’ page hosted on LovePenzance.com where you will find lots of information as well as contact points.

Penzance Town Deal Board is looking for projects that centre around regenerating the town so that it is a place that people love to live and work. The board is also looking at how they can support jobs by creating opportunities for skills and training as well as empowering small businesses. The board will also look at  new local transport schemes that compliments regional and national networks.

Vice Chairman Rob Parsons says “The Penzance and Newlyn Town Fund is a fantastic opportunity for us all to ask ourselves what we want our town to look like in the future. This potential investment gives Penzance and Newlyn a chance to create the future we all want”.

This new fund is another step forward in regeneration projects for Penzance and forms part of a wider investment plan and many other groups dedicated to the future of the town. The board’s vision is to raise up all voices across Penzance and Newlyn.

The board is also dedicated to inclusivity, equality and reducing environmental impact. The entire Town Investment Plan will be written with a future in mind that is sustainable and fair.

Further guidance on the exact criteria for funding will follow so please follow LovePenzance on your favourite social media platforms, where we will share thoughts and visions from the community as well as updates from the board.
