The Penzance Town Deal Board announces £500,000 boost for people focused projects across Penzance and Newlyn
The Penzance Town Deal Board has announced that five projects, which benefits the communities across the region of Penzance and Newlyn, have been given an extra £500,000 boost to help enable its continuation in benefiting the local area.
The funding, which was made available to the board from the government, aims to create a diverse economy, providing quality jobs and opportunities within the Cornish region that connects locals and visitors, with inspiring coastline and culture, and puts the people and the planet first.
The stipulations for the funding were that the money needed to be spent and the project completed no later than March 2021. While the board all recognised what a gift this is for Penzance and Newlyn, it was a unique challenge finding projects far enough along in their journey that would fit these criteria.
Working with partners like Cornwall Council and Cormac, the board was able to create a portfolio of projects that were then submitted back to the government for approval. The five projects are:
- Bike Shelters – More good news for sustainable transport in Penzance as the board supports a plan to place several bike shelters throughout the town that will cater for several non-car parking options
- Shop mobility – As pedestrianisation increases in the town, the board is considering those with access concerns through its investment into a variety of scooters to support those in need
- Prom works – Development continues on the Prom and the town board were able to support funding for parts of the overall plan that were unable to make it through the budget. This includes increased access to the beach as well as seating areas
- Acorn Theatre – A historic building of huge cultural significance requires upgrading in order to maintain its high-quality performance space and continue to be a valued part of the night-time economy
- Outdoor Gym – The board is working to revitalise Newlyn through funding a new state of the art outdoor gym area for the public
Chair of Trustees at The Acorn, Paul Mullin, said: “This is fantastic news for the Acorn and for everyone who comes here to perform, enjoy performances, take classes or volunteer.
“The theatre was last upgraded over 20 years ago and this, alongside the wonderful generosity of our friends and supporters, will go a long way to securing the venue’s future for the next generation.
“The Acorn also helps generate an estimated £175,000 a year spending in other businesses in the night-time economy, so it’s good news for Penzance too.”
As the board continues to work on its Investment Plan for the £25m bid, it looks to deliver something direct to those that live and work in Penzance.
