Penzance residents invited to shape the future of sustainable travel in their communities
Residents and businesses in Penzance are being invited to have their say on proposals to improve public spaces and the way people travel in the area.
The Sustainable Travel Network project is a practical response to the Climate Emergency declaration made by Penzance Town Council in 2019. It aims to enable residents and visitors to make more sustainable and greener choices for how they travel by:
- creating more public space and greenery in Penzance;
- building a network of safe and accessible walking and cycling paths;
- reducing traffic congestion and pollution;
- improving the health and well-being of residents and visitors, and;
- supporting the local economy and regeneration.
The proposals focus on several locations including Market Place and Green Market, the top of Causewayhead, Branwells Gyratory, Coinagehall Street, Market Jew Street, Wharf Road and New Road.
A drop-in exhibition is taking place on:
- Wednesday 6 December between 1pm and 7pm at Penzance Exchange Gallery, Princes Street, TR18 2NL
Visitors will be able to find out more about the proposals, view the designs and give feedback. Members of the project team and Penzance Town Deal Board will also be on hand to answer questions about the project.
The team will be collecting feedback via an online questionnaire which will be available from Wed 6 December until Sat 6 January alongside the exhibition boards on: https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/penzance-town-deal-sustainable-travel
A paper copy of the questionnaire will be available at the Penzance Town Council office and St John’s Hall reception.
Martin Tucker, Chair of Penzance Town Deal Board said: “This project is a vital step towards creating a more sustainable and attractive town that responds to the Climate Emergency and supports the local economy. We hope that many people will come to the exhibition and share their views in the online survey. To be able to deliver an impactful project that benefits the area in the long term, we need to hear the views from all members of our community.”
Penzance was one of four areas in Cornwall to successfully bid to the Government’s Town Deal Fund which aims to boost the local economy and opportunities for residents.
Penzance was awarded £21.5 million and the Sustainable Travel Network project is one of seven projects which aim to support the regeneration of the town.
Cllr Louis Gardner, Economy Portfolio holder for Cornwall Council said: “The Sustainable Travel Network project is a great example of how the Penzance Town Deal Fund is supporting the economic development and regeneration of the area. It’s important that the Town Deal projects reflect the wishes of the local community and over the last few months stakeholder groups and the Penzance Town Deal Board have been developing these designs with our project team. I encourage everyone to come along to the exhibitions to have their say.”
Supporting the regeneration of 101 towns across the country, the Town Deals are part of the Government’s plan for Levelling Up the UK economy. As Local Lead, Cornwall Council supports the governance role of the Penzance Town Deal Board and administrates the Town Deal Funding programme in Cornwall.
